 |
|
Hi,
First post here, I've discovered the site and community only quite recently and I was very interested about the old Gameshark codes produced between 2005-2010 that allow to play exclusive multiplayer maps in Goldeneye. I understand later on a switch was done to other means, since Gameshark is a limiting factor, but I salute the efforts which went into these.
I do have one question, I've acquired a bunch of AR and an Xplorer 64. I tried running Depot with objects with my Goldeneye cartridge and my xplorer64, but I keep having a black screen when Goldeneye starts up.
I'm wondering if I'm doing it correctly, or if my Xplorer 64 has not the same capabilities than a GameShark 3.3. Basically my question boils down to : do I really need a GameShark, and the latest version of it, to run these custom levels, or does an Equalizer, Action Replay or Xplorer can achieve the same?
Thanks ! |

I figured out the part coming from the Xplorer itself. Turns out there are master codes needed to boot some games with it, including Goldeneye. I know GameShark also has it, but these are Xplorer specific. Luckily, the only existing master codes I could find, created by Kai666 for PAL, also work for NTSC.
Additionally I'm not sure if the codes need to be encrypted or can be used directly in their Gameshark format. Gamehacking.org has a converter to move between GS/AR and Xplorer format.
Another issue I see is that some of the multiplayer level codes are of "repeater" type, and from what I've read these aren't supported by the Xplorer. Hopefully, not too many of these multiplayer levels have repeater codes. I found at least one which doesn't (Archive)
Anyhow, now the game boots but I'm not sure how I'm supposed to get into a custom multiplayer level. Just selecting it from the multiplayer screen doesn't seem to do it.
If anybody has a clue on this, it will be definitely appreciated. |

I would need to know which codes/levels you are trying to access. From my quick research, an Xplorer 64 should support GameShark/AR codes as-is. _________________ Also known as Spyster or Nyxem

I should add I managed to get Statue to load for 2,3 and 4 players by picking "random" option from the multiplayer level selection screen.
Edit: solved the no weapons issues. It was because I had the MCM cheat on, and even though I didn't do anything with it, it seems it removed the ability to use weapons.
The code I used for Statue is this one:
8002A8F7 0016
I'm still struggling to boot any other level. What I'm really not sure of is if all these custom GS multi levels have a similar pattern to get them to boot, like always going to "multiplayer" then "random", or if some of them boot directly when launching the game (Dam note say "automatic", whatever that means), or if even some of them boot when selecting the corresponding solo mission. I have no clue and I've read dozens of post about these codes, but none of them cover their use in details. I'm assuming it was common knowledge when these codes were made, so it never seemed necessary to document how to use the codes as it seemed obvious. |

What's the actual limit on total codes for Xplorer?
If that isn't known, we can find it pretty easily by writing a bunch of codes to change letters in a string and seeing when they stop (or crash).
The reason I'm asking is...
most stage codelists require "Code Generator" and 8MB of rdram to have enough codes available.
GameSharks have two "modes", each with a different limit. (Okay, more like four modes but not going into that)
They're tied to whether "Code Generator" is on or off, which also depended on you having 8MB of rdram.
When code generator is off, the actual list is kept just after the exception handler. The limit is very low and can vary slightly depending on that nuance I didn't want to go into, but basically 16-20.
When code generator is on it does codes completely differently. There's actually two lists but again, won't get into that. The "normal" one is made of your codes converted into ASM and, at maximum, you can have about 250. Non-80/81 codes reduce the maximum a smidge. 50- codes aren't packed as a loop like you'd expect, they're expanded. 50s are only useful to avoid typing codes out, otherwise they take the same amount of space.
Automatically Loading Stages
Those are rigged so no matter what stage you try to load only a certain stage will play. The reason is because the codes that change all the objects in the stage will corrupt any other stage you play. The codes don't turn off. GS users could turn them off from the in-game menu, not sure if there's a similar option.
There were a handful of multiplayers that very, very carefully hacked the codelist itself to turn codes off when the stage it enables isn't being played. Those wouldn't work with Xplorer unless it happens to keep its ASM in exactly the same place and generates it in exactly the same way. |

Thanks so much Zoinkity! That makes sense, I know about the code generator but didn't known it changed the GS boot mode and the total limit of codes it can handle at once. I'm pretty damn sure the Xplorer has a similar feature, I have the original instruction manual I will check and I will retry the codes while having it ON, if possible.
As for your question regarding the upper limit with a specific code, I would be glad to try that out if you have it.
Thanks for explaining how the GS boots and uses the code, it's more clear now. One thing though, how do the multi stage codes that aren't in "automatic" and aren't versions of an existing multi level (Facility, Silo) supposed to be chosen ? Do they create a new entry inside the multiplayer selection screen (since likely the codes are currently cut way short maybe that's the case and I just don't see it)
Or is it like I did for Statue and you need to pick the random option which triggers the right level? |

Well, no good news. I activated the ingame trainer from the main menu and tried to boot the following levels without success:
Facility backzone : ingame trainer menu pops up when the game boots and if I select "return to game", I'm stuck on a black screen
Dam : same
Control 2P : same
Archives courtyard : same
Streets : same
I suspect that activating the ingame trainer let the full codes actually run, but it crashes because the Xplorer doesn't support as many codes at once as the GS ? It's guesswork obviously, if anyone has a better idea...
As for me, I'm beginning to think that I won't be able to run these codes on the Xplorer and will have to look for GS / Action Replay instead. |

Oh! Completely forgot about this, but the reason they're broken into parts is that GameSharks have an unmentioned limit of how many codes can be in a single cheat entry. The limit has to do with how it uses bitflags to say if it's on or off, default or normal. That might be different on XPlorer. Wish I knew more about this device...
Also, this is a USA release right? PAL and Japan required different codes.
If you see the code "8002A8F7" you don't get a choice, it always loads a single stage.
All the menu stuff like the stage select image, name, etc. are all at the start of "part 1" these patches. If you didn't see a name or picture update, the codes weren't working.
Here's a breakdown of how Sumerian works so you can see what's going on:
"Sumerian Pt 1" .off
This loads only a single stage, Aztec. You don't have a choice after all.
This lets Aztec borrow Stack's setup files.

These change a base allocation address so the same codes can be used for 2, 3, and 4 players. The D1- lines check the player count, and if it matches the value it changes the base address.

Sorry, can't remember off-hand and don't want to give bad info. My regular computer's in the middle of a backup right now, don't have docs in front of me, and it will probably take a couple days for it to finish. When it's done I'll edit this. Want to say menu mods and selected stage considering the values and range.
Code: | 812ADD34 5375
812ADD36 6D65
812ADD38 7269
812ADD3A 616E
812ADD40 5355

812ADD44 5249
812ADD46 414E |
This is a string! It's the name of the stage, in ASCII. Since you didn't see this, it's safe to say Xplorer wasn't running the whole list of cheats.
Code: | 8002B123 0009
8002B127 001C |
These two select the stage image and the ID of the stage to load. Considering you don't get a choice in the matter due to the first line, not quite sure what the point is except maybe having the right name appear?
The rest should be modifying objects: location, type, etc.
These used to come with instructions but like all readmes were ignored and lost. The first few by Wreck & Rune were posted in the gscentral.com forums and those went down shortly after this website was founded. Wreck, SubDrag, Krijy, and I all had "how to use" things written up with our distros. It was never obvious how to use these, and there were plenty of questions anyway. |

I appreciate you taking the time to break it down for me.
Yes it's the US release of Goldeneye.
I have no idea if each code in Xplorer has to be smaller, I suppose I could try splitting them up? I'm not sure based on which criterias I should split the sub-codes so as to not break them though.
I really wanted to try the Dam one because it feels so different from the regular multiplayer levels, but yeah as you said I saw no updates whatosever in the menus, but that was before I used the ingame trainer. I think if I split the codes more, I can maybe get some levels to boot.
I think I read all the old posts on this forum to try and get info on how to use these levels and typically I didn't see the details you shared. If you find your old files, or some old timer chimes in, I'd love to get to actually learn how to use these. I really want to play these new levels with my brothers. |

So I tried splitting up GS codes into smaller parts to try and see if the Xplorer accepts it. I did this in a "dumb" way, in the sense that I split the code into smaller 16 lines parts. Maybe I'm breaking stuff by doing this, I would say probably even, but I have no clue to tell where to split in a smarter way. All this with the assumption that the Xplorer accepts at least 16 lines at once in a code, based on the codes I've seen produced on Kai666 website.
I did it for a couple of codes without success. I'm still getting the ingame trainer prompt on boot, then blackscreen.
To take a specific exemple with Control room, I went from this:
Control Room
Hacked By - Zoinkity
Emulator Tested - Yes
Console Tested - Yes
Players - 2, 3, or 4
Level Load - Automatic

Ok, but this one worked, interestingly, at least as far as I could tell (I was able to boot in facility 2P mode, with access to the backzone through door, and there were weapons on the ground in the big room at the far end where your blow up the containers in the end). Also the intro was cut short which I think is a result of the "Standard settings" one.

I'm moving forward on this! So I found out today that I could pass subparts of codes as long as what the Gameshark is accepting.
I got Facility Backzone 2p working BUT alas not completely.
The level boots but the Xplorer won't accept the full code because I think it saturates after roughly 170/175 lines (175 times XXXXXXXXXX:XXXX)
I'm digging more to find the exact limit, but I can now consistently boot into Facility BZ. If I try to put the weapons part of the code, which is quite long and puts the full length to near 200 lines, it crashes when the game boots.
It's also why I can boot into Surface Day which is around 160 lines, that's why the Xplorer accepts it.
So I think actually it would be possible to boot any MP level optimized to be under 170/175 lines (I'll work to get the exact number) |

I could be misremembering, but didn't the D0/D1 codes use up slightly more space in RAM than 80/81 for GameShark? We had a calculator made at some point. I thought it roughed out to about "1.5 lines" instead of 1.0 for those ones. Been away from GS use for a long time now. ROM editing and flash carts made it so much easier, and convenient. |
