Try not to pass out in surprise at this, but the upcoming Perfect Dark game has in fact been cancelled, after five or so years in production. Microsoft, who of course own Rare decided to scrap the game, and other games, and cut over 9,000 jobs worldwide.

The gaming industry is a real mess nowadays. How much time and effort is spent on so many modern games, only for all of that work to be (mostly) abandoned when the games are cancelled.

Still, even as a massive fan of the original PD, I had very little hope that this new PD would be any good. Rare long ago stopped being the gaming perfectionists that they once were, Microsoft's influence on Rare has never been good, Perfect Dark Zero was as generic and disappointing as could be, and the trailer they released of this new game was all flash and no real indication of any gameplay. So if the game had come out, then I expect it would have been a boring and indifferent interactive movie, full of cutscenes to interrupt the gameplay at every turn, a boring story, generic weaponry, etc.

Wheeeee, let's hear it for shareholders dictating every braindead publisher decision!

To be fair it was being developed by a spinoff studio, The Initiative, which was closed as a result of this decision. Rare's in-house game Everwild was cancelled though. Across the various M$ hardware & software developers there's something like 9000 jobs lost.

Wouldn't be surprised if they pull a Sega and go into cross-platform software development, dropping the xbox line altogether. PC specs have plateaued and hardware sales slumped; when your console (or everyone's really, arcade included) is a de-facto PC strange thoughts start brewing.

Just wait for the day Nintendo starts publishing GB carts again and manufacturing GBCs. Retro is the only market growing these days.

My general thoughts are... good riddance.

I know Alix Wilton Regan (the new Joanna) is a great actor from a few roles I'm familiar with, my favorite being a radio host she played in the original Forza Horizon.

As for the PD reboot itself-- it didn't look remotely interesting to me. The vibe I got from the 2024 trailer was that it was heavily scripted; the gameplay derivative and not very fun... a lot of smoke and mirrors/parlor tricks setting off my BS detector. It didn't come across like a real game to me-- but rather their vision of a game, which is not the sort of progress they should've had in 2024, after the company was formed in 2018.

Since the All In One mod for the PC port of PD N64 is my favorite game ever, I always figured the new game wouldn't be targeting me as their audience. It wasn't going to have the immensely customizable splitscreen Combat Simulator, with aliens in tuxedos that giggle when you throw poison knives at them. It wasn't going to have anything that made the original experience special, because the original PD is a game that couldn't thrive in today's landscape of microtransactions and games as a service.

So it looked as though it was trying to be every other game that isn't Perfect Dark. Which, sure, go ahead. But at that point I'd rather they change the names to something else and make it a new series. Because it certainly did not look like Perfect Dark to me...
