I recovered this from an old hard drive's Iternet cache files. This is for anyone who was around back then.

In brief, www.insidetheweb.com hosted messageboards that were the primary form of communication for the community. Everyone had their own Geocities or Angelfire site in the meantime, but the discussion took place on various boards there. Posts allowed HTML, which meant that anyone who knew even basic HTML could change the background of the messageboard to their own preferred image, play a sound on loop, or even disable the forums. Some of the boards were:

    Messageboard of the Gods
    Jaws Goldeneye Messageboard (destroyed by an HTML injection)
    GoldenEye Archive Files (run by Æ / Ænema, who I later ran into on the OCReMix forums)

The forums were full of unsubstantiated rumors. This was during EGM's heyday, when they published a fake All Bonds cheat that one could achieve by...I guess I've forgotten (I think it was, beating Egyptian on 007 mode with all sliders set to max). A user named Rob actually pulled this off and recorded himself on VHS doing so at one point. There were also plenty of "my uncle works for Nintendo" rumors, along with rampant discussion about the Citadel; this was back before it had been conclusively proven to exist. A constant topic was trying to get a moon jump or Y-axis-altering Gameshark code to work, so that the Silo's spawn vent could be observed. Virtually no one knew what they were doing on the forums back then; it wouldn't be until SubDrag and some of the people from the Sonic 2 Beta community came in that traction was finally gained, there.

Arguments, spamming, and flaming happened all the time, of course. At one point, there were secret societies being formed (like the AAB3:16?, which stood for "Alliance Against Bossk, 3:16, and ?", who were three users accused of spamming the forums). A funny Canadian guy named Destructo also joined at some point and ragebaited people before settling down and getting some users to join his wrestling e-fed. Before Perfect Dark's release, Æ entered a website contest and made a site for Planescape: Torment, actually winning, if I recall. After PD came out, Insidetheweb.com shut down. Everyone migrated a couple times to different boards, before settling on a webhost run by an insane dude who wrote essays on why it was his disposition in life to "kill God"; this guy eventually disabled his site, and that was that. Several people migrated to the Sonic 2 Beta website by Simon Wai. Wreck7 was originally one of us on the Insidetheweb.com forums, and (man, my memory is fuzzy) ended up running the Sonic 2 Beta community for a while and even becoming a Nintendo mod. I believe it was: http://s2b.webjump.com/

Not many people made the jump to the Perfect Dark community, since Insidetheweb.com was gone at that point. Eerily enough, one of the last posts in 2000 was Rob (the same guy who beat Egyptian maxed on 007 mode) posting a conspiracy theory about something happening in "August 2001" that would justify a new war in the Middle East. I later tried to help SubDrag with some Gameshark research on PD, but this was 20 years before I'd meaningfully understand pointers, addressing, and other basic requirements (still knew just enough to find a couple fixed moon jump codes for Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon). Some of the website links I've saved are below; the Wayback Machine might work on them.

Wow, angelfire's a survivor! Those sites are still up, minus a few broken external image links. Even Geocities Japan is gone now and they didn't retire that until a few years ago. Geocities everywhere else died decades ago. Haha, all the ICQ IDs.

Kinda miss the free-for-all nature of the web back then.

Never visited these circles, was exclusively gscentral.com until this place was formed. Nice to see this though. A few of us were talking about whether any of the old rumor mills still exist, what was actually known back then, where some of the fakes originated, etc.

Kinda funny none of us realized all four tux arms were left in _{x,x _}

Forgot about the moonjump code, most famous for visiting the island. It's a lot trickier to visit the silo vents with it. Have to slip out of the clipping to escape the rails but get close enough to "fall" to the bottom of the silo (pretty sure that was clipped, just no working ladder), then carefully slip at the right elevation to navigate the turn into the little room. Eventually released some codes/patch to clip it all.

Hopefully SubDrag & Wreck chime in at some point. Thanks for reaching out!

Wow that takes me back. I spent way too much time attempting to find Oddjob and Mayday back then. Kept trying to get inside the Depot shipping containers, that was the best of the rumors. Fun times.
