After indexing everything and getting accustomed to the other text string file, you'll easily be able to make a new one for your pickups. I didn't mention what you could get rid of in there, so I should probably PM that information to you. You'd be able to figure it out on your own, but I might as well save you a bit of time. Why waste it on something when you don't need to? Though some people may say what we are doing right now is a total waste of time. Don't you just love it! |

Alllllriggghhttyyyyyy!!! Sorry I just needed to say that.
I just finished up with version 2 of the pickup text mod, a major update that brings pickup text up to date with the watch text, featuring EVEN LONGER names! Here is the link: http://kcghost.googlepages.com/pickup2watch2.ips I tested it out, works great. It gives you version 2 of watch text as well as pickup text.
Bugs/Problems:
1. This one threw me for a loop, I totally did not expect this, when I picked up the Kalishnikov AKSU-74 Carbine, the text was too big and overlapped that damn ammo thing again! Its not too big a deal, but Im thinking either move that damn thing or something very cool that just came to mind. I read something from Rares old website Quote: | Q2: What resolution does GoldenEye run in? There's a pathetically small amount of money riding on this. (Jason R Clark)
A: The game runs in 320x240, but the front end is higher. Hope you win. | . "The front end is higher" Would it be possible to heighten the video res output? Could you imagine how awesome Goldeneye would look? (not neccessarily good, would be laggy, but awesome on emulator). Im hoping Zoink sees this post, lol.
2. The effects of scrambling for compression. I wanted to keep some beta text in as well as the Silo key pickup text for future use (possible gadgets used for Wrecks new levels) but I could only save the micro camera from deletion, as I scrambled to get my file compressed down to the right size, it was way too big.
Anyway, Enjoy. |

You could actually delete pretty much any inventory item text past the tank, redirecting their offsets to the same blank space. However, doing this would put a damper on certain missions. The Plastique explosives and Camera in the Silo, as well as your gadgets in the Bunker i, would be missing their names. You'd have to modify the stage setup files, then their language data. If you know what you're doing, you can rename any item in the game in a single mission. Much like the Dam and Frigate with the "Bug" gadget, or the Statue and Archives with the "Blackbox" flight recorder. Heck, your could make the "PP7 Special Issue" turn into the "Pee Shooter Special" in the Aztec, if that was your goal. It's really not difficult, but it does require much more work. Probably more than it is actually worth in most circumstances. Though if it is a brand new mission we're talking about, it's a simple procedure.
The Cuba map runs in a higher resolution.
Zoinkity would know more about this than I currently do. |

Forgot to mention this a while ago. Me and Wreck (Mostly Wreck) had created resources that help document the watch and pickup text, which were very useful in creating the mod. http://wiki.dotshell.net/index.php?title=Goldeneye_Weapon_Text_Mod
That is a link directing to a wiki where I wrote an article on Modifying In-Stage text (follows the same rules as modifying these) and links to the hosted resources.
The wiki was started by Shell at RWP, with the goal in mind to Mod Goldeneye any way we could. In fact It was Shell who gave me the idea to mod the weapon text. At the time I wanted to do a simple project that used the compressor/uncompressor.
On Higher Resolution: *Ahem* *ACHEM* I have no idea. It must be in the setup file or somethin, right? Zoink, where are you? |

Nice, I remember you mentioning about wanting to do that. If it helps other people out there to learn how to modify different aspects of GoldenEye, than I'm all for it. Infact, I could even do the same thing for a few other text strings in the game. This should allow for more changes by even the most amateur of modders.
That screencap of Natalya in the cell is friggin' hilarious! LMNO! |
