Hey there. I feel like a little introduction is in order.
I go by rentafence on the net. I've been an avid fan of both Goldeneye (and Perfect dark, thought I only got around to playing a used copy in 2005 or so) since I was a kid, and remember scouring Detstar's Goldeneye site for all the newest cheats and discoveries within the game's code. I've been lurking around Goldeneye Vault for the past week or so, and am completely impressed that you guys have managed to create custom maps for this old game. I got into modding/making custom maps for games in the early 2000's with the release of Halo PC. Since then, I've gotten a decent grasp of modeling with 3d studio max, and would love to get in on some of the map making action here. I have a few question though.
1. Is there any way to extract models from Goldeneye, specifically the model of JB? It would make the map making process much easier if I had an object to keep scale by.
2. I can't remember what you guys use, but you import a .obj from hammer into some 3d modeling program, and then export that after optimization and such. My question about that, is there something about the file format of the modeling program you guys use, combined with exporting from hammer that makes this entire process work? I loathe hammer. I'd much rather do all the level modeling straight up in 3d studio max and export from there.
Anyway, I hope you guys can answer those for me, and thanks for the blast of nostalgia, this is an awesome website. |

Welcome to the forums.
1. Using the Goldeneye Setup Editor you can export models to .obj files. I think you need to use the beta editor. But you can edit the scale of a level so you don't need to build a level around a certain scale.
2. I don't see a problem with that. _________________ 304 HP |

As Camaro said, it's possible to change the stage scale. Extracting the Bond model would be a good idea, but if you've seen how characters display in the editor, the model wouldn't be too useful for scaling yet. I think a better idea would be to extract a few rooms from a stage of your choice, and model based on their dimensions. I use Facility for my maps, since it's geometry syncs up nicely with a power-of-two grid.
It really doesn't matter what scale you model at, as long as you're consistent, since the game can just scale it up. If you're shooting for PD compatibility, you'd be best off modeling at 1.0 scale, in which each unit corresponds to a centimeter. radorn has more on that here:

No, you should be good to just use 3dx Max and export directly to .obj. The only reason the people who use Hammer need to jump through so many hoops is because of how much worthless geometry it produces. |
