I might try it out if it works on W64/Not64.

My interest in Mario 64 hacks died when I found out none of them worked on real N64 hardware. Not that they don't look awesome and all.

Even Skelux hasn't provided a single one that works on real hardware, and he's supposed to be one of the big daddy Mario hackers. He said he was going to make Star Road 2 compatible, but for newer mods like Mario 64 multiplayer 1.2 he hasn't made them N64 compatible. Star Road probably won't even come out until forever. He flagged my post as spam when I said I would love to play it on my N64 with my friends and fam, and suggested a way that he could have fixed it in Assembly knowing the reason why Spinouts Multiplayer OoT hack doesn't work on real hardware. Like what the H? Why did that get flagged as spam.

Some hackers, even very talented ones, are just content that their stuff works in their preferred emulator. I've never understood it myself. I get that with the N64, until recently, it wasn't easy to hardware test stuff, but this even happened with SNES hacks where there's a nearly 100% accurate emulator.

I know what you're saying, and I mean no disrespect to any of the said hackers that are satisfied with it working on emulator. Personally I only use emulators to test hacks I work on. I prefer to sit back on my nice comfy couch with my friends and game on TV. I didn't spend all that cash on my N64 flash cart for nothing after all.

I feel somewhat the same way. I was following Skelux's progress on YouTube during Star Road development, and was really excited to try it out on console. But, seemingly like everything else for SM64, it doesn't run on a real N64. That's the only reason why I have still yet to play any of the mods released for the game. And with the rising number of gamers purchasing flashcarts like the ED64 or 64Drive, these guys should definitely consider getting their popular mods to be console compatible. Judging by various message board posts I've read, there's a whole new audience just itching to play this stuff on their N64.

Being fortunate enough to own an Adaptoid, I have no complaints playing these hacks on just an emulator. The way I see it, the original hardware is 17 years old - why should it be expected that a modern hack work on such old hardware? For me, the nostalgia factor comes from playing original games, not hacks. And aside from nostalgia, I find the experience of playing on an emulator to be superior to the original N64 hardware because of the sharp image quality - far sharper than you can get on a composite video output.

The problem comes when the emulators do finally get more accurate, and either these hacks stop working or the emulator authors are forced to include broken legacy code in the emulator to make something work that shouldn't in the first place. Again, this already happened with the NES and SNES as the emulators got better.

(And Sub and I can attest to how inaccurate current N64 emulators are. Crashes that happen on console 100% of the time but never on emulator. Significant cycle timing differences, too. Unfortunately I can't afford an Everdrive or other flash cart right now to hardware test my work.)

I agree that emulation has the potential to look better, but honestly, no N64 plugin gets it perfect yet. Parts of GE/PD definitely look better on hardware.

Controls are not really the same on emulation either. Your not really able to turn or well....in general the controls are not the same as the "Real Thing"

Since it's pertinent to the accuracy discussion (although feel free to split this off into its own thread), CEN64 seems to be making great progress lately:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaWTlqzBFvw

This is an excellent development and something the Nintendo 64 really needs. Hopefully this will have a positive effect on emulators and hacks as a whole.

Edit: On the high level side of things, Gonetz is working on a new OpenGL video plugin:

http://gliden64.blogspot.ru/

So those few things that still look better on hardware might be a thing of the past soon.

I agree that Cen64 (and any other significant N64 emulator related subject) is relevant to our community (Shooters Forever is basically a GE/PD fan club!), and I have been following that Cen64 thread on and off for a few weeks. Since I'm just a non-techy, end user, I haven't ran the alpha builds of Cen64 that have been released, but I am looking forward to the day when a workable beta is released!
