What is the best photo editing software to use to make images? I use Photoshop, but find that it will only let me save a .bmp image as either 16 or 32 bit, not 8 bit like it should be for the ROM. |

I like paint shop pro, but I'm pretty sure I've done it with photoshop before. Don't you reduce colors to < 255 and then save as bitmap and it's an option? |

Isn't there some feature to reduce the # of colors? I used to use it. |

In GIMP you'd convert it to an indexed image, so photoshop is probably much the same. They'll give you an option on how many colors to include and the reduction method.
It's been ages since I've used photoshop itself; I have a 16-bit copy for win 3.1, litterally picked up off the side of the road. It's a whole other beast.
You might also be able to get away with openning the editted image in paint/pbrush and saving it as a 256 color image. That, though, can be problematic and also tends to create output with empty entries. Save a copy of the original, definately.
-you do mean 24bit, not 32bit, right? Although certain windows resources utilize 32bit bitmaps, the specification only accounts for 24bit with a filler byte. (in other words, they'll either ignore or !trash! the alpha channel!) _________________ (\_/) Beware

Paint's images are reduced so poorly, they look awful. |
