 |
|
(I was originally going to PM this to SubDrag, but decided to post it publicly so others can add their opinion.)
I just got back into using the setup editor after taking a break, and I'm actually having a hard time adapting to its controls again. During my break one of my friends and I got back into playing Doom, and I made a few maps using Doom Builder. It also has a visual editor-like feature, but its control scheme is much more intuitive (to me, anyway); it works like a PC shooter, and allows you to "fly" through your map using the keyboard and mouse rather than relying entirely on the keyboard for movement like the setup editor does. This is also how camera control works in Hammer, by the way. I'm not sure how hard it would be to implement this kind of change so feel free to reject this request if you decide it's not worth it.
Here's a basic overview of how it would work:
When entering the visual editor the mouse will lock into its window. The mouse pointer would disappear and an editing cursor (you could use the Goldeneye crosshair for the cursor image) would always be centered on the screen. Turning left and right is mouse controlled, as is looking up and down, while all other movement is keyboard driven. The other editor controls can remain the same, and the mouse will be unlocked whenever another menu is opened (clicking the visual window again would relock the mouse, and a key could be used to unlock at any time).
Additionally five user-configurable keys would be needed:
Move Forward (W/Up Arrow by default)
Move Backward (S/Down Arrow by default)
Move Left (A/Left Arrow by default)
Move Right (D/Right Arrow by default)
Unlock Mouse
And there should be a configuration option to chose between this scheme or the current control scheme. If you need additional clarification just let me know. |

I don't mind the current editor controls, but I do think your idea is pretty good. There should be customizable controls for the editor, similar to emulators. |

Also, what would be nice in this controls revamp if it happends is that I suggest that you can only turn the camera only turns a maximum of 90 degrees. In other words, you can never go upside down in the visual editor. I used to accidently do that and I became a real pain... |

Hmm I wouldn't mind seeing a change in the controls, but if it's too much work the current ones will have to do and I don't mind as well. |

Yeah, that's something I forgot to mention, Doom Builder works the same way and only lets you look straight up/down, you can never go upside down. |

I always wanted to at least let you remap the controls. Adding it to my todo list for end of Dec.
1) Control remapping in preferences (don't think mouse is happening, sorry).
2) Ack, I forget, what was it? I know there was something. |

2. Make resizing objects easier |
That wasn't it, it was something for either BMW or DB. |

I don't think I've made any suggestions other than this one lately, it was probably for bmw. |

Ah, 2 was to make an IPS patcher that runs through a directory of ips patches and generates all the roms. |

Yeah, that was it.
DON'T DO IT! Because if you do, then I feel obligated to finish my mp patch.
haha, j/k. Hopefully by then I'll have made some progress - the warm weather is nearing an end and I suppose I'll be indoors much more. |
