So I was wondering what would be the best and easiest way to make something like the Caves terrain in a map. So far all I've worked with is Hammer and the block primitive. I know you can clip the blocks but is this how to get a rugged terrain like effect? I don't know if I'm being clear. Like in TimEh's Island map, the walls on the way in aren't straight, like a cave. What would be the best way to do this?
Sorry if that isn't too clear, I have a lot going on in my head right now and I can't think straight, I just want to get some of the clutter out _________________ 304 HP |

This is easier to do in most model editors than Hammer. I'm not sure if TimEh did Island's rocky areas in Hammer, or in XSI, but it's possible to do things like that in Hammer, it just takes a bit more work. The original Half-Life had some nice looking natural terrain, but I'm not sure what the best method to create it is.
Now, in DeleD, it's fairly simple to do. Create some geometry, and make sure it's all merged. Then use the Smooth tool on that geometry; it should make everything "round" and more natural looking. It works a lot better when you have more vertices to work with. There's also the Magnet tool, which I used in Hotel's courtyard. Make a flat plane divided into sections, which are merged together. When you pull on a vertex with Magnet, it'll move all of the other nearby vertices intelligently, giving you a smooth "bump" for hills and such.
Neither of those methods is perfect for realistic terrain though, because they're too perfect. Once you use them, you should go and move some individual vertices around (maybe even with Magnet again) to give it a bit more randomness. |

I know how to make easy terrain in hammer, although it may not be the best thing to use. Instead of creating a block shaped object, create a spike shaped object or arch shaped object, then edit the verticies. as simple as that. Hope that helps.
EDIT:
oh yeah, arches kind of works for roling hills, if you edit their verticies right. |

creating displacements are the easy way to do it in hammer. that is if you are using the hammer editor for source engine games(not sure version #). the one for HL1 editing doesnt have them. if you have that one try what this guy does http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bt94yhThqDo |

Thanks. I wasn't sure if the edit vertices would end up giving me undesired results. And I didn't know that different version of Hammer are used for different things. I think I have the HL one _________________ 304 HP |
