This is a project I spent some time working on, in an effort to help improve multiplayer performance. I'll note the main stuff below.

It attempts to cut down the number of polygons used to draw first person weapons, without affecting how they appear. Mostly it removes sections you cannot see while equipped (front sides, under sides, and other pieces), and were only visible within the watch menu. The hands used for pistols were also cut down. The models are smaller as a result, and may use fewer textures.

Characters that feature lo-poly distant models have all been modified to use the shortest trigger distance in the game (St. Petersburg Guard). This means you need get closer to the other player to render their regular model parts.

Visual effects displayed from bullet collisions and explosions were reduced. Things like amount of shrapnel were halved. The small fireball from bullets striking surfaces was taken out, as was the puff of smoke that follows. These kind of effects can be hard on frame rate, especially when very close to them.

As for other things in the mod, it is fairly straight forward. All MP stuff unlocked at start, No Radar and No Armour cheats always accessible, some minor corrections / edits to level setups, randomized flag locations, rearranged spawn point order, and extra characters.

Some of my edits were theoretical improvements. I don't know how much this all goes toward helping performance. I did see promise in the lo-poly character models being used more frequently, and smoke / flame / shrapnel effects being reduced. Hopefully this mod sees some use, and people can comment on how it feels after playing it.

v1.02 is the newest release.

Have you tried disabling anti-aliasing?

As you've mentioned that Oddjob is not included due to classifying him as cheating, maybe you could use the Oddjob model from Goldfinger 64 as he looks tall like everyone else Smile

Oddjob is actually still possible to play as, but it requires the button code that unlocks the extra characters. In this mod, everyone but him is available, and he is added at the end of the list once the button combination sequence is completed.

Disabling AA is a good option to consider including in an update. I personally don't really love how the game looks that way, but it might help performance. I get a PS1 vibe from the visuals, which feels very wrong in my mind. Maybe we could make it into a cheat option? So people can toggle it on / off easily themself. It would be unlocked at start, same as the radar and armour cheats. No Anti-Aliasing cheat. Off is normal, On is disabled. Sounds like a very worthy addition. I might message you with another question or two about some other ideas.

Thanks! I will try it out once I'm feeling better (got a cold). Does this replace 2x or 10x Health cheat? The Tournament Edition mod hasn't used any memory expansion upgrade patches, so we should be good for this, then.

I have an idea. I currently offer two versions of the Tournament Edition patch, but this could reduce it to just one. There is the regular version, and another that replaces all level music tracks with a silent one. Could a cheat option be created to "disable" music? A "No Music" cheat. I don't know for a fact that music has a noticeable impact on performance. It is more information being processed. Some people also like playing their own music, and the old NGPA Edition got rid of it, as well. Just another thought to add to this.

I'm guessing this force loads track 0014 to play? Which cheat does this replace (800696B0 RAM cheat on/off spot)? Is that 10x Health? Any other special instructions?

Thanks. Does the unlock level one matter? I ask because the Tournament Edition uses a custom entry that allows specific cheats to be unlocked by default, rather than by beating a mission or target time. It keeps the rest of the cheats locked for the player to get themself, should they want to, and only certain ones open on a new file (no radar, armour, AA, and now music).

IIRC if there isn't a level assigned then it cannot be unlocked

Zoinkity had come up with a custom unlock cheat entry that allows the cheat(s) to be unlocked by default. It comes after the final one (Egypt 00 Agent completion) in the list. I don't understand what it is doing, but when a cheat is using that entry, it gives access to the cheat menu and the cheat on a new file. I've used it for No Radar and No Armor. You could always check it out in the Tournament Edition mod, to see for yourself.

The only oddity I have encountered so far with it, is that if you are using a cheat on a new file, than no levels will appear as unlocked in the mission select folder. All are blacked out. However, here is the weird thing. Any level you click on will bring up Silo. It is the only playable mission, if Dam was never completed. Maybe you might be able to figure out why, and possibly how to change it? Obviously it should be Dam, and not Silo.
